A sample of engravers from Pinar del Río is presented at the “Taller Experimental de la Gráfica” who work from different themes. Among the artists exhibiting is Jesús Carrete. This time the theme that he has recreated is the figure of women in the environment of the pandemic.
The domain is present. A magnificent use of distinctive color is demonstrated in his work. From the diversity of faces, the different views towards different points of the woman who protects herself, the woman who cares, the woman who has the responsibility of facing the new reality imposed by this pandemic are hiding. The self-absorbed environment of the search for religiosity is suggestive, of the presence of ethnic elements reminiscent of Eleguá, religious images of customs of Afro-Cuban origin.
The sensual line that marks these faces also returns with the pandemic and also returns with this new theme, in the image of the creator. Carrete shows us women who are thinking about what is most internal, looking for answers, solutions or waiting. The wait is also noticeable in the faces and in the lines, that although we know the way, each of them are really hemispheres, due to the diversity and the way that he represents them in a circular way, but fragmented as half moons. , of quarter moons representing that inconsistency that is life itself, a phenomenon in which the pandemic has placed the female figure.
Remarkable, in addition, is the color and texture. Carrete has us used to working with textures that recall natural elements such as tree bark. It is a complex composition that works from the geometric, the very clear, very round lines of semicircles, the points and the lines that intertwine the figure as an essential whole of what is the fear of the new conditions in which the woman she is the center: as a patient, as a professional who attends and who lives with this reality, imposed as the woman of the family, the woman who faces and who only trusts that her religion, her thinking, and her own destiny have a way out. Chiaroscuro stands out in this series. They put a little shadow on the female face that is the center of the image, all the phases in which the woman, like the moon, has to face and demonstrate even the silence and her own life that she puts at risk Technically, in the engraving there is a superposition of colored elements, which amaze and give an almost perfect cleanliness and finish, indicating the exquisiteness of this plastic artist.
